TRANSPORT MINISTER Doug
Lewis recently announced that all
lifejackets and personal fiotation
devices (PFDs) in Canada will be
tested by Underwriters
Laboratories of Canada (ULC).

The testing and quality control
for all new lifejackets and PFDs
will be transferred to ULC from
the Canadian Coast Guard under
anew, five-year pilot project. The
Canadian Coast Guard will con-
tinue to issue approval certificates

ed on ULC’s laboratory reports
and certification.

“This new process will speed up
tests and approvals for the safety
apparel which will, in turn, im-
prove service to the industry and
public,’’ Lewis said.

The lifejackets are for use in
larger vessels, such as commercial
Ppassenger-carrying vessels, while
PFDs are used in smaller craft.

be tested for compliance to Cana-
dian General Standards Board
criteria for buoyancy, material,
colors and strength, among
others.

There are about 100 types and
sizes of PFDs in Canada. Two
companies manufacture all
larger-vessel lifejackets in Canada.

Sunrays can be a

boat’s worst enemy

ANYONE WHO has consid-
ered purchasing a new boat
lately knows that today’s prices
constitute quite an investment.

With proper maintenance
and protection, you will be
able to recover a large part of
that investment when you sell
or trade,

First, be sure you buy a
good quality trailer that’s built
to fit your boat model. Since
most boats spend 70 per cent
of their life sitting on their
trailer, proper fit is a must.

Take into consideration the
size and location of the bunks.
The more total square inches
of contact or support of the
hull, the better.

Make sure the boat’s tran-
som does not ‘‘overhang’’ on
the rear of the trailer. The
bunks should extend at least
two inches past the transom to

support the weight of the out-
board motor. Remember, your
trailer is also your ‘*dry dock"
facility.

When not using your boat,
keep it in your garage or car-
port, where it will be out of the
sun's harmful rays.

If this is not possible, be
sure to purchase a quality boat
cover. The sun is your boat’s
worst enemy. Wax your boat
twice a year with a good paste
wax and use only an approved
marine cleaner (not household)
to clean the fiberglass and up-
holstery.

Perform ali your regular
maintenance on your motor.

lubricate steering cable, etc.

By following these recom-
mendations, you will ensure
your boat’s good looks, per-
formance and resale value.
