Herman’s way of saying thanks.

His real passton is reserved for
his mistress, Masha (Lena Olin), a
hot-blooded Russian. When she
insists on a kosher wedding and
suggests bearing his children, he
wavers. After all, a married man
has prior obligations.

In this case, Herman has two
responsibilities. His first wife,
Tamara (Angelica Houston) was
reported killed in a concentration
camp along with their two
children. Four years after the war,
she traces him to New York and
re-enters his life. In his words,
she’s risen from the grave, put on
nail polish and come to America.

Discovering that he is a bigamist,
he decides to ignore the situation.
When his mistress announces she
is pregnant, he succumbs to her
demand of marriage.

What is wrong with Herman,
you ask. Blame the war, After
hiding from the Nazis, he can't
shake the feeling he is about to be
captured. Stormtroopers fll his
nightmares. During the day. he
hallucinates that they are in pur-
suit. The paranoia has robbed hin
of his ability to make decisions.

But why do these women want a
man who has Jimited charm and
the natural ability to make them
miserable? Even after they find out
about each other, they sull want
him.

The film is wel! acted (Olin and
Houston received Oscar nomina-
tions) and has a polished !ook;
however, after two and a quarter
hours, the characters wear thin.

From the English school of
bizarre comes this tale of a driven
ad man and his talking boil.
Richard E. Grant (Withnail & 1)
stars as the wild-eyed executive
who is blocked by a new way to
sell acne cream. A nervous
breakdown follows when a pimple
on his shoulder becomes an
animated, immoral adviser.

The audience is never sure if this
monstrous boil is real or the pro-
duct of a madman, but the social
satire is viciously eloquent.
