Rar opie rR SQM Te eS A MENA, { 2 i i i : Former NYD alderman passes away A FUNERAL service was held Wednesday at West Yancouver United Church for former North Vancouver District alderman and longtime newspaper columnist Pat Slattery who died Saturday in Lions Gate Hospital following a lengthy iliness. Mr. Slattery was 76. Pat Slattery j “ He moved with his wife, Doreen, to North Vancouver in °1954 and was first electea as a North Vancouver District alder- raan in 1966. Mr. Slattery served the municipality in that capacity until retiring in 1975, having ini- tially become involved in local pol- itics to improve local recreational facilities for young people. He was the driving force behind the establishment of such district recreation facilities as the Karen Magnussen, Ron Andrews and William Griffin recreation centres and fought tenaciously for im- proved soccer and baseball playing fields. Mr. Slattery was also a strong voice for North Shore tourism and served as the district’s repre- sentative on the Greater Vancouver Visitors and Convention Bureau. In addition to his North Shore community work, Mr. Slattery, a sports writer, was one of the first journalists in Canada to write a regular men’s fashion column, which he did for 25 years for the Vancouver Sun starting in 1962. Mr. Slattery is survived by his wife Doreen and three children, Patti, Mark and Paul.
