8 - Friday, March 13, 1987 - North Shure News Mailbox PREMIER'S REQUEST Liquor pricing policies need local attention Dear Editor: Municipalities, including the District. of North Vancouver, recently received a request from the pro- vincial government soliciting our opinion on provin- cial liquor pricing policies. The review, requested by the premier, covers liquor prices, liquor distribution, branch mark-up and price change procedures. One of the more specific concerns seems to be the pricing of alcoholic beverages in restaurants in British Columbia, i.e. gouging, which appears to hurt the tourist industry. I thought that it was very nice of the premier to ask our opinion on the matter since, in North Vancouver, we get our fair share of tourists not to mention our own local residents who seem to like the stuff. I can think of a thousand reasons why the price of Uguor should be reduced. I can also think cf a thou- sand why prices should be as high as the market will bear. Rather than engage in a debate which could go on Collins critic ‘bigoted’ Dear Editor: This concerns Mr. M.L. Butler’s Feb. 27 letter, in which he describes a column by Doug Col- lins as ‘“‘hate-mongering trash ... straight from his toilet bowl ... bigoted foaming.” 1 think Mr. Butler’s choice of language, in throwing mud at someone he disagrees with, in- dicates it is just possible he, and not Mr. Collins, is the bigoted one. David Savage North Vancouver - forever, this was a wonderful opportunity, | thought, to suggest to the premier that he share the net pro- ceeds of liquor sales in the municipality with us. Since municipalities are far more efficient than cither Vic- toria or Ottawa in handling money, such a move could only benefit local residents. It would also be timely inasmuch as the province is shifting an ever greater financial burden onto the shoulders of municipalities by cutting funds to wor- thwhile community organizations such as Silver Har- bor Manor and the North Shore Family Services, to use as an example, not to mention the financial loss as a result of the new provincial assessment policies. So | made an appropriate motion to that effect. Unfortunately | didn’t get a seconder, which is too bad, because those who feel they are being gouged by paying exhorbitant prices for a bottle of wine might not feel nearly as bad if they knew that a portion of it would come back into their own municipal coffers.
