North Shore takes four awards NORTH SHORE athletes walked away with four awards from Saturday night’s 20th annual Athlete of the Year Banquet held at the Hotel Vancouver. The Linda Moore curling rink frora North Vancouver won Team of the Year honors, while Sarah Pike, a Grade 12 student at Sen- tinel Secondary School in West Vancouver, took 1985’s High School Athlete award for her achievements in volleyball, track and field, and skiing. North Vancouver* s Joe Murphy, who is expected by hockey pundits to be the number one player taken in the NHL's June draft, won Junior Athlete of the Year, and North Vancouver triathlete Les McDonald took home Masters Athlete of the Year honors. Also nominated from the North Shore were diver Paige Gordon from West Vancouver, who lost out to Joe Murphy in the Junior Athlete category, and Linda Moore's coach Rae Moir, who lost out to softball coach Adrian Lavigne as Coach of the Year. Eighteen athletes in six categories were named as finalists in the annual process to select B.C.’s amateur Athlete of the FOREST Hills Little League (FHLL) and the Capilano Junior Baseball League (CJBL) are ready for the 1986 season. The FHLL, one of the oldest Little Leagues in Canada, will launch its 28th year April 19 at Eldon Park. Last year saw the largest sign-up of players in the history of both leagues. ; Over 410 youngsters from T- Ball-age players, up to Colt, will be playing in the 1986 season. This year FHLL will again operate four major league teams, - and four minor league teams, but will add extra teams for a total of six pee wee teams and seven T-Ball teams. ; CIJBL will field four Pony ‘‘A’”’ teams and four Pony ‘‘B’’ teams plus two Junior Colt teams. The Junior Colt teams are part of the 1986 Evergreen Colt League and will play throughout the lower mainland in areas. such as Co- quitlam, Port Moody and Ridge Meadows. CJBL president John Wittig and FHLL president David Heal point out that in addition to the 410 youngsters involved in the two leagues, there are over 125 parents working in various capacities’ in- cluding. coaching, managing, equipment responsibilities and per- forming umpire duties. All Pee Wee baseball games ars played at Canyon Heights School grounds as is T-Ball, Minor League games are played at Cleve- land Park (Nancy Green Way) and Major League games are played at Eldon Park as is Pony baseball.
