Beware of Chinch Bugs -
Eight years ago our Lawn
and Garden Care booklets
didn't even mention Chinch
bugs. Perhaps because 1n
Canada they were either not
here or not known about.
But for the past few years
more and more lawns are
being ruined or at least in-
vaded by these tiny
creatures.

Chinch bug damage usual-
ly begins when tempera-
tures are in the high 70's or
above. Symptoms first ap-
pear as patches of dead
grass. This condition is often
confused with drought. The
Chinch bug inserts a slender
beak into the grass plant, in-
jects a poison and extracts
plant juices. They continue
to spread into wider areas of
turf until large areas are
destroyed. Because of the
toxin, grass does not
recover but Chinch bug
Gamage and the area must
be reseeded.

Chinch bugs are extreme-
ly small, being only 1/16 of
an inch when mature and
difficult to find. To test for
Chinch bugs. remove both
ends from a metal can and
press it into the ground on
the border of the damaged
area. Fill the can with water.
if Chinch bugs are present
they will float to the surface.
They do greatest damage

from mid summer to early
fall

Diazinon or Sevin are the
best chemical for Chinch
bug control
