STORY AND PHOTOS BY ELLSWORTH DICKSON The Lions Bay home of Ron and Janice Pratt has the distinction of being built twice. The cight inch diameter fir logs originally came from the mountains near Mission, B.C., and were taken down the Fraser River, and up Georgia Strait to Gambier Island where Janice’s brother Jamie notched, cut and erected the logs into a shell of the final house. Next the logs were tagged, the house dismantled, and barged to wf, nearby Lions Bay where it was re-erected and finished. This claborate procedure began about two years -ago and has recently been completed with much effort on the part of Ron and brother-in-law Jamie (who owns Errico Construction). Some of the features of this house arc; a tropical cherry wood entrance hall, hardwood floors in the living and dining room, a heatilator fire-place, and a large family oriented kitchen open to the family room and breakfast nook. One very pleasant room is_ the solarium which adjoins the dining room and has that magnificent Howe Sound view: - The lower floor has three bedrooms, all with a sea view. The master bedroom also. has a_ heatilator fireplace, walk-in closet and a semi-ensuite bathroom. The Pratt house was built with solar heating in mind, and it works very effectively. The main floor has log construction of maximum insulation. There is a unique 2” thick concrete. floor separating the first and second level which retains the daytime heat to warm the house at night. The two heatilator fireplaces are the main active heat source. In addition, the solarium is a passive solar collecting unit for another heat source. Unlike some of the ex- tremely rugged lots of some Lions Bay homes, the Pratt house has a one-third acre grassy landscaped lot with a vegetable garden. on informed the News that the wood for the fireplaces comes from the “cut-outs” for the windows and doors.
