THE BIG EVENT is coming.

automated library system.

It’s well known that West
Vancouver residents use the
library intensively,
borrowing over 16.5 books a
year for every man, woman
and child (the average for
the Lower Mainland libraries
is 10.7), so it makes sense to
streamline the circulation by
the use of the ULISYS
computer.

The Memorial Library has

set un video display ter-
minals specifically for the
public to use instead of, or in

addition to, the card
catalogue.

The library staff are
certain that as people

become familiar with the
procedure of searching for

information under author,
title or subject, the com-
puter will become
demystified. Natural

curiosity will turn any fear of
using the computer into fun.
It takes a bit of practice to
adjust to the new way of
looking for a book, but the

examines China

A TRIP to China, once an
impossible dream for even
the most dedicated traveller,
is nowadays not only
possible but becoming quite
popular. Since the People’s
Republic opened its doors to
the West, the scholarly, the
adventurous and the just
plain curious have stood in
line to observe and admire
the wonders of this ancient
country.

One such traveller is Jack
Joyce, whose trips always
have the added excitement
of flexibility: he travels
alone, and makes no
commercial arrangements in
advance. He visited China in
May and June of this year.

Mr. Joyce will be sharing
his experiences in two
evenings of slide-talks at the
Lynn Valley branch of North
Vancouver District Library
in the next month. On
Tuesday, October 5, his
topic will be southern China,
a fascinating geographic area
of limestone mountains and
