Some people feel that because we live in a consumer society the kids might as well get used to the idea. Others feel that children are easily manipulated by slick and exciting messages. The tender by Canlan Investment Corporation was described by Mayor Don Bell Monday as “a staggering bid.” Eight developers responded to the District call for development of the site for 24 cluster type single family detached homes on strata lots. Land Agent Geoff Williams pointed out to council in his report that four of the bids exceeded the recommended reserve price of $1,260,000 or $52,500 per unit. The Canlan bid was $65,000 per unit. District will receive $1,544,000 for the land after costs for a seismic survey and landscape —s recon- maissance have been deducted. Trees not dangerous If a tree falls in the middle of a forest is it dangerous? Or alternately, if a tree falls in the City of North Vancouver but doesn't hit a member of the public, is it dangerous? In the opinion of City council the answer ts no. Council last week con- sidered a request by a City resident to remove three tall poplars from a_ neighbor's property, under the Dangerous Tree Removal bylaw. Local residents will be given a chance to comment on the proposal at a public hearing. Alderman Gordon rose warned council that residents on nearby Kings Road will be upset by the development because “they will find these new houses only five feet away from their back fence.” Acceptance of Canlan’s bid by council has been made conditional upon the adoption of a siting bylaw and compliance by the developer to the District's zoning procedures and landscape policy requirements. Alderman Mary Segal explained that these con- ditions have been set because of the unique heavily wooded terrain.
