Summer swimming a success

After -a- highly
successful summer
swimming program, the
West Van Otters’ are
preparing for a new fall
program starting next
week.

Otters will be open
September 10-14 from five to
six p.m. at the West Van

- Aquatic Centre for any
recreational swimmer who is
at the Red Cross Junior level

.and. also competitive
swimmers.
Although the main

swimming season for the
Otters ended with the B.C.

through

Championships early in July,
several individuals kept on
the summer
competing at various meets.

One of the highlights of
the summer was the per-
formance of 13-year-old
Maureen McTavish.

Competing a' the B.C.
Summer Garres as the
youngest swimmer, Maureen
picked up two gold and three
silver medals.

Swimming with the 15-17
year olds Maureen took a
gold in the 200 metre
backstroke, setting a new
games record. She also
picked up a gold in the 400

mediey relay and silvers in
the 200 medley and 200 free
relays as' well as the 100
metre backstroke.

Another Otter,
Tudhope, picked up a silver
in the boys 400 metre relay.

At the Division II
championships held in
Victoria seven Otters took
part, most of them for the
first time. Highlighting the
team effort was Sandi
Melody who captured first

lace in the 200 metre

In Seattle in July, nine

year old Sara Frisby picked |

up bronze medals and two
sixth place finishes in the
Seattle Open Pepsi Swim
Challenge.

Club officials expressed
pleasure with the summer
program and are looking
forward to new recruits for
the team program for the fall
scason.
