Report on
recall and
initiative
readied for
legislature

THE PROVINCIAL §gov-
ernment’s Select Standing
Committee on  Parliamen-
tary Reform Conduct,
Standing Orders and Private
Bills has started drafting its
report on ihe issues of recall
(firing MLAs) and initiative
(referendums).

The committee is made up of 12
MLAs, including North Van-
couver-Lonsdale NDP MLA
David Schreck and West Van-
couver-Garioaldi' independent
Liberal MLA David Mitchell.

“The committee has consulted
widely with the public, and we are
now ready to prepare our recom-
mendations to the legislature.

“We shall strive. for a unani-
mous report that makes clear pro-
posals to the legislature and that
balances the public support for

- these changes with the require-

ments of our constitution and
parliamentary system,’’ said
Vancouver-Kensington NDP MLA
Ujjal Dosanjh, the - committee
chairman.

Donsanjh is responsible for
producing a first draft, which the
committee will consider at its next
meeting.

The report is expected to be
released by the end of the year.
