DAVID Rutledge was
lith and Frank Allers
15th during last
Saturday’s
KOOL/Toyota Atlantic
race in Toronto.

And while only four spots
separated the two, their situa-
tions couldn’t be more differ-
ent.

West Van’s Rutiedge is a
rookie in his first full season in
the open-wheel series.

Allers has competed for
years in the series and will race
in only three of the 13 events
this season (he plans to race in
Vancouver and Houston).

Rutledge, with the full
support of the Binder Racing
team behind him, is driving a
brand new Swift 008.a car.

Allers, with iust his crew
chief Peter Griffiths and team
owner Tom Johnston in his
pits, is driving a five-year-old
Revnard (a car that must be
retired following this season).

As has beer. the case for
Allers the past few seasons, the
lack of seat time makes it diffi-
cul: to-dial the sensitive car-into the right set-up. This year that
is cven more an issue since the series went to larger wheels, from
13-inch to 15-inch. Last weekend’s Teronto race was the first of.
the season for Allers, and the larger rims proved a challenge for®
both the driver and his engineer.

“During quaiitving I was thinking “Geez, this track s
bumpier than last year’,” Allers said Tuesday. at his ‘Lor
Lonsdale Porsche shop. “Then we realized all the litde. bum
was fecling were from the setup.”

stiffiths explained that the larger tires have stiffer sid walls
than Jast year’s wheels, making the set-up of the’ suspe
much different than what the team is accustomed to. Given that
this was the Johnson team’s first chance to use the new wheels,
the team and driver struggled during qualifying and the race. in:
search of the proper set-up.

Also, 14 of the race’s 42 laps were run under the yellow flag,
giving Alters precious little time to keep the Reynard at race tem-
perature.

Toronto, like all tight street courses, is always a battle of
attrition, and fast Saturday's race was no exception:  Rudledge
made hard contact with the wall during Satur
qualifying session, but managed to steer clear of treuble during
the race.

Remaining stops in the Atlantic scries include:

August 2: Trois-Rivieres, Quebec
August 9: Lexington, Ohio
August 16; Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin
September 5: Vancouver
Sepiember 12: Monterey, California
October 4: Houston, Texas
