Documentary to get a screening in North Van By Layne Christensen Community Reporter BOWEN Island film- maker Gillian Darling Kovanic’s search for a minister led her to her lat- est documentary subject. O'’Siem, which premieres tomorrow is a 53-minute doc- umentary on Squamish Nation member Gene Harry — healer, Spirit Dancer, cultural canoe paddler, Shaker = Church Minister, devoted father and the man who joined Darling Kovanic in marriage with hus- band Rudi Kovanic. “Gene married my husband and I three years ago,” says Kovanic on the phone from her island home. It was during their ceremo- ny at Kyuquot Sound on the northern tip of Vancouver Island that “we realized we met a very fine person,” she says. Kovanic has 10 years’ expe- rience producing documen- taries and a masters degree in South Asian anthropology. Her husband was a director of photography for the CBC’s Nature of Things before incor- porating their film and video production company, Tamarin Productions, in March. Both were inspired to tell Harry’s story and to make it their first project. _ “It’s a very North Shore story,” says Kovanic of the film- ing which took place at various locations including Ambleside Photo submitted O'SIEM is a one-hour film that follows the spiritual journey of Spirit Dancer and Shaker.Church Minister Gene Harry (above). Park, Deep Cove, the Sea to Sky Highway and Mosquito Creek for 30 days last spring and summer. Harry and his family live adjacent to the Mission reserve in North Vancouver. “O’Siem” means “Thanks for sharing your wisdom” in the Musqueam dialect of Halkomelem. Harry’s wisdom is the focus of the documentary and is what carries the viewer through the various aspects of his life. Kovanic wanted the docu- mentary to be relevant to the First Nations people, “for their teaching and healing.” She is also hoping to have a strong turnout from the gener- al public tomorrow night. “We have a lot to share and a lot to learn,” she says, The screening is 7 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 14, at the Squamish Nation rec centre, at the corner of Capilano and Welch, in North Vancouver.
