Doug-free | Logging cuts water quality diet pian Dear Editor: Re: Mr. Doug Collins “On the Other Hand.” I have worked on the North Shore continuously since 1976. As have many people I have had to deal with all types of stres- sors. One was driving in Lower Mainland traffic to and from the North Shore. Another was the views expressed by Mr. Collins in his “On the Other Hand” cel- umn. Moving to the North Shore has enabled me to walk rather than drive to work and that was the first big stress reducer in my ife. A second big stress reducer was eliminating Mr. Collins’ column and anything to do with his diatribe from the material that I choose to read. That included letters to the editor related to his column. Tam happy to report that Iam “Collins Stress-Free.” 1 hope other readers will follow suit and report their findings to you. You might even get the occa- sional report from readers whe suffer from being unable to stop reading Mr. Collins. Could be a new disease. We'll call it “Collaholic.” Pathology would include verbal diarrhea. Dave Waiker North Vancouver Dear Editor: When it comes to “muddying the waters” regarding the impact of for- est practices on our drinking water catchment areas Patrick Moore has no equal. In his Dec, 22 letter to the News editor, Dr. Moore cites a study in the Seymour watershed that con- cluded: “logging was a contributing factor in just five of 1,200 land- slides.” What Dr. Moore doesn't give us in his letter is a comparison of the total area of the clearcuts in which the five slides occurred, and the number of slides in an equal, com- parable adjacent unlogged area. He also fails to mention the respective volumes of the soil material that slid in the logged and unlogged areas, If Dr. Moore consults the scien- tific literature, and in particular, the Greater Vancouver Water District's Watershed Management Evaluation and Policy Review Final Summary Report of August 1991 (Appendix A), he will receive appropriate enlightenment. There he will find data showing that on an area-for- area basis, on steep slopes between 27° and 35°, slides in our water- sheds occur more frequently in logged areas than in unlogged areas. If Dr. Moore really gets the hang | of apples-and-apples comparisons ¥ and delves a little further into the literature, he will find abundant evi- dence that mudslides in roaded and clearcut areas are much larger than natural mudslides in comparable terrain. In view of the above, it is plain- ly not justified to contemplate any further roadbuilding or clearcutting in our drinking water catchment areas, if indeed we want to cease creating further water quality prob- lems for ourselves in the future.
