This year Folkfest was chosen to host the Commonwealth Games Power Smart Sport and Culture Tour of the Queen's Baton. B.C. Hydro partici- pation certainly enhanced the three- day festival. The steering committee, with representation from the three North Shore municipalities, also included B.C. Hydro, North Vancouver Recreation Commission, die North Vancouver Arts Council, Host Lions, the North Shore News and others, The committee decided to include youth in the event with a youth concert at Norseman field to celebrate the end of the school yeur on Friday, June 24, and asked the youth committee of the North Vancouver Arts Council to take on this task, The concert was a success. ‘The youth attending were well-behaved. Taere was no vandalism. Their departure at the end of the concert was orderly. Youth volunteers cleaned up the site in preparation for the next day. Parents who picked up their chil- dren after the cvent said they were leased the young people had a con- vert, The proceeds of the concert are going to a legacy fund for youth. We empowered the youth com- Mmillve ta produce a concert that would be of interest to them. The youth concert was just one ele- ment of an event that was an enor- mous success. Tae Queen's Baton telay involved many people as it travelled across the North Shore from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay. The multicultural performances, children’s activities and craft mar- ket on Saturday and Sunday were a delight. The breakdown strikes me as rather odd when the current ref- erendum is about the Young Offenders Act and two areas most strongly opposing a charge are those with the most serious youth problems on the North Shore today (Lower Lonsdale and Lynn Valley).
