Commons Standing © Committee on Canadian Heritage will be asked to carry out a public review aimed at forging a new con- sensus about the role of the CBC in the new multichannel universe. This follows announcements ear- lier this year regarding the CBC, namely the appointment of a new ' president, the government's agree- ment not to impose new cuts on the CBC over the next five years, and to reprofile the budget cuts announced in April 1993 At that time, in order to provide the corporation with business-like flexibility, the government also agreed to grant the CBC the power to borrow up to $25 million under spec- ified circumstances. — The standing committee will be asked to examine the impact of advertising as a means of funding the CBC, und explore the feasibility of introducing alternative revenue-gen- erating mechanisms in order to pro- vide further financial stability for the corporation. ‘By asking the committee to hold a public review, beginning in the fall, the government is initiating an open public discussion on one ef Canada’s most effective instruments for the protection and reinforcement of our cultural sovereignty. The committee will be asked to report to the govern- ment by the end of November 1994.
