San Francisco’s not like that;

we talked to nvo couples and

found they were both local.
Sunday morning in San

‘Francisco had a number of

choices: an attractive break-
fast buffet at the Rex, coffee
across the street at the Yakety
Yak, or brunch at the Buena
Vista cafe overlooking
Alcatraz.

Being San Francisco we
did them.all, ending with a
taxi to the bay and the cafe
where travel writer Stan
Delaplane dropped by on his
return from Shannon Airport
in 1952. There he had dis-

covered the Irish coffee,
which the Buena Vista adopt-
ed and soid to the world
although not without credit
to Irish bartender Joe
Sheridan.

Then, with time running
out, we hopped on to a cable
car right across the road, and
moments later were grinding
up Hyde Street and over
Russian Hill. Without a
doubt it’s the best travel
experience for the money in
the world with the possible
exception of the Star Ferry in
Hong Kong.

Our car was a good one

{according to what looked
like official graffiti Humphrey
Bogart rode it around
1946/47) with a brakeman
who had a good sense of
humor. We hauled up
Washington Street then
teetered over the top of Nob
Hill with a wonderful view of
the handsome Transamerica
pyramid.

It’s only reasonable, I sup-
pose, that a beautifull city
should also have elegant sky-
scrapers.
