Kiwanis Club seniors support youth development ed funds for youth group activi- ties, but has not taken an active role in program development. During the past year, group projects netted close to $20,000 for Lions Gate Hospital and other organizations. CAB The SMP was established in 1988 to reduce mortality from breast cancer by detecting it at an early stage. Annual screening mam- mography is recommended for women age 40 and over who have ne signs or symptoms of breast disease. The procedure is very ef- fective at detecting breast cancer at early stages when it cannot be discovered using other methods, such as seif-examination or doc- tor’s examination. For women under 40, a physi- cian’s referral is required. “The screening mammography program continues to be a real success story,” said Cull. ‘‘Since it began in 1988, more than 100,000 women have been exam- ined.’* [AY LORMOTIV! Cancer Agency, the B.C. Radiological Society, the UBC Department of Diagnostic Radiology and the B.C. and Yukon Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women in B.C. and Canada. In 1990, over 500 women died of breast cancer in B.C.
