Society answers rescue calls THE NORTH Shore Lifeboat Saciety (NSLS) was kept busy with two search and rescue calls on April 3 and 4 in the Horseshoe Bay and Burrard Inlet areas: @ On April 3, Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary rescue crews were called to search for an overdue rental beat from Horseshoe Bay. At 9:30 p.m. the Rescue Coor- dination Centre in Victoria re- quested the assistance of the NSLS’s Auxiliary One vessel. The crew was dispatched to the Bowyer Island area where the missing boat was reported to be with four people on board. A land team also checked docks and marinas along the ~ Howe Sound shore. A Canadian Coast Guard hovercraft from Richmond also joined in the search. After a 2%-hour search the missing boat was found beached on Anvil Island. Its four occu- pants were treated for mild hypothermia on board the hover- craft and transported back to Horseshoe Bay while Auxiliary One towed the rental boat back to Horseshoe Bay. @ On April 4, at the other end of the North Shore, Canadian Coast Guard auxiliary rescue crews were called out from their Deep Cove base just before 2 a.m. to search for a person who had reportedly jumped from the Second Narrows Bridge. The NSLS’s Deep Cove boat assisted the Canadian Coast Guard cutter Osprey and a small number of commercial vessels in the search, The search was called off at approximately 4 a.m. after the searchers failed to find any trace of the suspected jumiper. Pemberton Heights ereenbelt preserved "NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL PEMBERTON Heights res- idents are pleased with the prospect of preserving a small piece of greenbelt that had initially been proposed for a six-unit assisted hous- ing site in the North Van- couver District neighborhood. By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer About three dozen neighbors of the six-block site in the 1300- block of Plateau Drive attended a public hearing on Tuesday night to support rezoning the lots from single-family RS4 to PRO (Parks, Recreation ane Open space). North Vancouver District Counci! voted to relocate the housing project last year, but hud split on the merits of an im- mediate PRO designation. Gordon Lloyd, an adjacent owner, described the lots in ques- tion as the only remaining natural greenbelt in Pemberton Heights. The lots, he said, acted as ‘“‘a buffer to residents below from highway noise and dust.’’ Lloyd reminded council that a parks designation was supported last year by ‘‘some 290 residents by petition’’' when the neighborhood protested the ac- tions of an excavator supplied by the district for a geotechnical survey of the site. The site is bisected by a steep bank, and access by the: excavator from Plateau caused ‘‘consider- able destruction of the terrain, in- cluding removal of vine maples and undergrowth and complete disruption of the pond here,’’ res- ident Doris Dowd said at the time. Dowd was back on Tuesday to thank the district for replanting and rectifying some of the dam- age, although she said there were still piles of debris created by the bulidozer. Homeowner Stephen Footman appeared to sum up the feelings of the residents about the lots when he said, ‘‘Although not particular- ly big in size it has great value to us.”* Council will consider a second reading of the bylaw on April 27.
