Funding announced for women’s centre NORTH VANCOUVER- Lonsdale MLA David Schreck presented the North Shore Women’s Centre (NSWC) with some much needed financial assistance Friday morning. Schreck anncunced the cen- tre would be receiving a $15,000 provincial government grant and $37,500 in operation funding throughout the year. The announcemen: comes a day after the celebration of In- ternational Women’s Day at Capilano College. The 82nd International Women’s Day is March 8. “We desperately do need some financial help,’’ Merle Todd of the NSWC said. Kim Laforest, NSWC coor- dinator, said the organization has been obsessed with fund- raising, but now it can focus more on running the centre. There are 28 womeu’s cen- tres across the province who are eligible for funding provid- ‘ed they are community-based and belong to the B.C. and Yukon Association of Women’s Centres. “The funding provided to- day is a first step in relieving the financial crisis faced by the ceutres and will allow them to expand their services,’’ Schreck said.
