September 11, 1991 - North Shore News NV District housing mix ‘unbalanced’ Dear Editor: Last year the Housing Strategy Task Force found there is a crisis in affordable and rental housing in the North Vancouver District. As well, an imbalance has devel- oped in the housing mix. Their report states that, since 1986, ‘**... the mix of new housing has been confined almost ex- clusively to owner occupied detached homes and townhouses. .. Overall the mix of new housing tends to meet the demands of more affluent buyers." As memory recalls, a cultural centre for West Vancouver goes back to the 70s when 1 remember it was an issue dur- ing municipal elections. hk was supposed to go where the seniors centre now is situated years, a community that is vital. interesting and healthy because of its socio-cconumic mix? Lurge North Vancouver District Council to speedily and decisively act on the task force recommen- dations which are wide-ranging, off 21st, and [ believe the West Van aquatic cenire and/or the seniors centre went in instead of a cultural centre. Both the seniors centre and swimming pool are important items that perhaps deserved priority over a cultural centre. In the case of the proposed cultural centre money is al- ready being saved in that the building currently exists where the theatres are housed and perbaps only renovations would be required. Ido think West Van council should attempt to examine this issue more closely with the idea of attracting revenue towards it from several sources, not just the taxpayer. Public and corporate dona- tions, support from local mer- chants, perhaps a GO B.C. grant and taxes could be a few of the funding sources. A cultural centre could in- deed add a unique touch to West Vancouver and surroun- ding areas with a wide par- licipation from various groups and artists. Public support for such a project is important and people must speak up. T.E. Peck Vancouver ? 34a A wy w innovative and deserving of serious consideration.
