20 — Friday, April 19, 1991 - North Shore News Weekend events set for Earth Day BEFORE THE commence- ment of the requisite line-up of Earth Day announce- ments, I have been charged with relaying to all readers ‘a message of vital impor- tance from the North Shore Recycling Program, namely: a Peggy Trendelh Whittaker ECOINFO HANG ON TO THOSE PHONE BOOKS! The new Yellow Pages are currently being delivered, and plans are in the works for the establishment of drap-off tocations for the recyci- ing of your old phonebooks. The green grapevine tells me that drop-off bins will be put in the parking !o1 of a particular ma- jor store that has branches all across the North Shore, but my customary discretion prevents me from saying any more until plans are finalized. Stay tuned ... Thank you for your attention; we now return to our regularly scheduled Earth Day promotional programming... Earth Day is being marked by the North Shore Recycling Pro- gram and the Going Green com- mittee by a display of the five composters available as part of the North Shore's backyard com- posting pilot project. The display will take place on Saturday (tomorrow) in Capilano Mail’s Grand Court. There you will be able to see in real life the composters offered to North Shore residents, and even sign up to have one delivered to your home and installed for free. The price of the composters is below their usual retail cost and are ranged to suit a variety of budgets. Present all day will be members of the committee responsible for the organization of the pilot pro- ject, so people will be on hand to answer your questions. There will also be general titera- ture on composting and screenings of the new GVRD video guide to home composting. Don’t forget the annual march, as of last year renamed the Walk for Peace and Planetary Survival, & MOONLIGHT MADNESS SEE OUR AD ON PAGE 32 NEWS photo Neli Lucente STUDENTS ENROLLED in the Capilano College Applied Land- scape and Horticulture program help set up a community garden at Lynnmour Community school in North Vencouver. A number of environmental organizations will have displays erected, so this is a good chance to have many of your eco-ques- tions answered by the experts. Cyclists are also encouraged to come and pick up environmentally friendly tips at the ongoing ‘*soft-riding”’ clinic, and put them to use on self-guided interpretive routes throughout the park. \ Mohawk gas stations are com- memorating, Earth Day by giving away tree seedlings to customers purchasing 25 litres of gas or- more. The company plans to give away 100,000 Colorado Spruce seedlings in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Western Ontario and the Yukon. “Along with Mohawk Canadian. Pride re-refined motor oil, Mohawk's ethanol-enriched gaso- lines have earned Environment Canada’s Environmental Choice EcoLogo by producing the fewest harmful engine emissions of any gasoline in) Western Canada,”’ states their news release. And for you trivia buffs out there: yes, Earth Day is in fact Monday, April 22, but for ob- vious reasons most events are be- ing celebrated on the weekend. Last year at this time I urged column readers to mark Earth Day by committing themselves to one environmentally-friendly change in their lifestyle. Now is the time to look back and congratulate yourself on the progress you’ve made this year ... and then turn around and keep pushirg forward. “| need some insurance.” 6&6 I'm Mike O'Connor and I can help you with that.
