And by taking one Marian Baronit’s Grade classes, where pupils writing, proofing and editing copy, one would think he was standing in the middle of a bus- ting big city newsroom. Baronit says her pupils spend as much time as possible on _ their novels. They are even willing to sacrifice their scheduled play time to crank out that best-seller. Other than offering advice on such things as spelling and remin- ding a student that, no, his book is not finished because he has yet to come up with a title, Baronit has left the project up to her pupils. The Writing Project has six steps. The first is the pre-writing stage in which the young author will write his or her story. A first draft is generated. It then gees through the editing pro- cess, in which the pupils consult with each other about the copy. “They're teaching each other, and in editing they discuss the look at and 2 are busy story. Someone might say: ‘I don’t get this point,’ "’ says Baronit. Once the students have edited their copy, they take it to Baronit. She might give further sugges- tions, but again, the final decision on what goes into the book is, naturally, up to the author. then proofread The students SALE ENDS MARCH 31 199t ~~ Can be seen on dis- play and burning at your local fireplace store.
