16 - Wednesday, October 25, 1989 - North Shore News SPORTS Boys’ v'ball teams compete HIGH SCHOOL boys’ voileyball on the North Shore — unlike the girls who have the strongest senior league in the province — is just beginning its struggle to become competitive with the rest of B.C. A seven-team junior boys’ league has been added this year to the senior circuit that was re- established four years ago. West Vancouver Highlanders, coached by Rhonda Betts, is the class of the six senior teams that include Argyle Pipers (coached by Rusty Furse), Sutherland Sabres (Lyle Johanson), Howe Sound Sounders (Rod Thompson), Sen- tinel Spartans (Marcel Druwe) and Handsworth Royals (Michelle Lachmann, Kelly McCrea and Kathy Petraroia), The Hightanders have done remarkably well at the U.B.C., Yale and Brookswood invitational tournaments, especially consider- ing an incredible list of injuries and illness that has sidelined six players at different times. Setter Greg Meldrum broke his finger, setter Rebin Mahood sprained an ankle, power hitter Tim Horsmait pinched a nerve in his neck, middle blocker Sean Richardson had tendonitis of the rotator cuff, Jeff Gerd had stit- ches in his chin and Paul Meyer contracted mononucleosis. Among the current starters, only Dsve Dunnet and Mark Ernsting have remained healthy. With everybody now back, West Vancouver — the tallest North Shore team whose starting six average 6’2°” — is looking forward to the two-day, eight-schsol Handsworth invitational which begins Friday and has attracted five teams from the Fraser Valley. This season’s goal for the local teams is to qualify as one of the two Vancouver and District area teams to the B.C. ‘‘AA’* champi- onships (for schools with over 160 boys in Grades 11-12), which is be- ing held in Prince George Nov. 29 to Dec. 2.
