Ranger attends Sw AFTER HEARING and singing about Our Chalet in Switzerland throush 11 years of Brownies. Guides, Pathfinders and Rangers, 16-year-old Navida Shivji was one of the very few chosen to attend this annual historic, international camp. By MAUREEN C Ss News Reporter Recently returned from her trip, this North Vancouver Ranger looks back with fondness on her experience. “d's a beautiful country with wonderful people, but the best part atout it was all the people | met and the friends [ made,” says Shivj The only British Columbian chosen for the Our Chalet visit, Shivji began corresponding with the girls picked from the other Canadian provinces long before they ali met in Montreal the day before their overseas flight. In addition to touring Zurich and Freiburg in Germany, the girls spent 10 days at the chalet, which was filled to capacity with Guides from the United Kingdom, Japan, Denmark and the U.S. Much of their time was spent hiking through the Alps and to nearby destinations for visits to lit- tle villages, carpentry shops, waterfatls and cheesemaking establishments. The evenings were taken up by presentations from the various groups on their countries of origin, local customs and Guiding. “We gave a fashion show featuring our new uniforms designed by Alfred Sung,’’ recalls Shivii. She was also busy completing her Our Chalet Challenge, which included various steps, from teaching the other girls Canadian songs to taking a dip in a glacier- fed stream. Back at home and returning to Carson Graham Secondary for Grade 1i, Shivji is looking ahead to attending university and taking up a career in law and politics. She plans to continue her in- volvement with Rangers and hopes to earn the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh award. Later she hopes to become a Guide leader. “Guiding has given me so much, especially a different persepective from what I have gotten at home and at school,”* says Shivji. Ithefs « at “Calphajon.
