Tom Hanks leads a capable cast through a familiar plotline cribbed from old Bob Hope ghostbusting movies. The film doesn’t seem to have much on its mid, leisurely coasting on its one joke and some soft-tooth satire on suburbia. Director Joe Dante has filled the screen with plenty of in-jokes for fans (Mayfield is Leave It to Beaver’s home town), and even has photos of Gale Gordon with a certain redhead from the Lucy Show decorating the set. it's too bad this attention for detail wasn’t lavished on the script instead. The Presidio * (Paramount Home Video) Rated M Mark Harmon contributes a per- formance equal to the script — in- sipid. He portrays a San Francisco cop saddled with a murder at the mifi- tary base and an old army nemesis for a partner (Sean Connery). Complications follow when Connery’s daughter, Donna (Meg Ryan) begins an affair with Har- mon, partly to spite her strict fa- ther and partly, we suspect, as a cure for insomnia. Wisely, director Peter Hyams tosses in a few fistfights and car chases to keep us all awake through the incredibly trite dia- logue and well-telegraphed devel- opments. “A cule of thumb” takes ona new meaning when Connery pummels a 300 pound thug using only his right thumb as a weapon. Even an old pro like Connery can’t work miracles.
