Mailbox READER SAYS Dear Editor: The Davis Plan to dercgulate B.C. Hydro, which was adopted by the Socred caucus when it met in Prince George recently with Premier Bill Vander Zalm, would constitute a major sellout of B.C. Hyde resources to private cor- porate interests and the United States, The proposal to allow private interests to develop hydro sites all over B.C. to get cheap power and to export to the U.S. would mean the end of any rational planned over-all energy policy for B.C. which is possible only under public ownership. Under the plan announced by Davis, the public will pay for the transmission system and = provide low cost transmission costs to the private companies. At the same time those companies would be ex- empt from having to pay anything toward paying off the huge B.C. Hydro debt. The public will be saddled with paying off that debt through increased hydro rates. The Davis-Vander Zalm plan goes much further than Bik Ben- nett ever did. Bennett abandoned the policy of generating hydro for B.C. use only, and replaced it with a policy of large-scale exports. This latest: scheme would turn over the resource to private inter- esis as well as step up exports to the US. [te would threaten BoC. s dwindling agricultural dand, our fisheries and ecology, Allin all, the Davis Plan is a very bad deal for B.C. Lt should be ejected outright. B.C. Hydro has not been a@ model public utility, but 7 ~ Wednesday, November 19, 1986 - Sorth Shore News 3.C. Hydro should be reformed | abandoning public ownership of hydro to the protit-seeking private sector would be much worse, H.C. Hydro shoultt be reformed bat not abolished. Maurice Rush B.C.
