"AN ARTICLE OF INTEREST conereun SQUAMISH AND SURROUNDING DISTRICT’’ 1) Most people really like Squamish This is not true — people who have been in all parts of Squamish recently are impressed but people who have not seen it recently are not. 2) Squamish is a fantastic place to raise a family This is true if the children are young — because of the safe, natural environment — swimming lakes, beaches, parks, hiking, cycling, fishing, skiing, horseback riding, and a superb community centre for organized sports — it iS a good, but not fantastic, place for teenagers. 3) Squamish is growing faster than any area in Canada This is probably not true but will probably be true by next spring when another large section of Howe Sound drive has been four-laned. 4) Prices are much lower in Squamish Food, clothing and most general expenses are usually about the same as North Van. Housing prices, however, are about fifty to eighty thousand dollars lower for similar properties. Overall the cost of living is only five to ten thousand dollars per year less expensive. 5) Taxes are really low in Squamish This is true. The yacht club is very inexpensive This is true but all members are required to do some duties. 7) The golfing is superb This is true but the local courses are probably no better than Pebble Beach or St. George's. 8) The schools are excellent The schoois are extremely competitive with most parts of North America but are not nearly as good as in the old days. 9) Squamish has colder winters and hotter summers A tittle colder and a little warmer. 10) Firewood is free This is true but you have to cut it. 11) Most people in Squamish commute This is not true — only about 40% of the town commutes but the number is rising but the number of loca! jobs is also increasing fast. 12) Squamish has a lack of stores and services This is a little bit true, but a raft of new shops and ser- vices have located here this year. 13) Thirteen is an unlucky number This seems to be substantiated by myth. 14) Squamish is absolutely beautiful This is not true. The surrounding scenery is world famous and the town itself is rapidly become a beauty spot but Banff is still more attractive. 15) Squamish is part of the North Shore Probably not true — but if Lions Bay is on the North Shore — so is Squamish. 16) Squamish is mostly old shacks Not true. There are about 4000 homes in Squamish in- cluding all four parts and 3500 of them are quite new. 17) A person with $1200 income can buy in Squamish This is true. 18) An investment in Squamish is unb2atabie There may be better places but | really don’t know any or i would tell you about that place instead of Squamish. The prices are low and rising. The rental market is tight and rents are rising. 19) This ad is only successful if you cali me Not true.
