DON’T KNOW about you, but I’m laughing
over that Charter of Rights business in which the

unions are yelling that
threatened.

There's this bloke in On-
tario, you see. Merv
Lavigne by name. Teaches
engineering at a mining
school. Isn’t a member of
the public employees union
to which his fellow teachers
belong, but is forced to pay
dues to it. And he says to
hell with that because some
of the maney goes to sup-
port causes in which he
doesn’t believe. In par-
ticular, he objects to his
money going to the NDP,
he being a Liberal.

In B.C., another freedom
fighter, Charles W.
Baldwin, objects to the
B.C, Government
. Employees Union grabbing
“his dough and handing it
over directly or indirectly to

the NDP, Arthur Scargill's

miners in the U.K., and
anyone else it thinks fondly
of.

Both men have taken ac-
tion on the grounds that be-
ing ‘forced to contribute to
such causes violates their
freedom of association and
opinion. But it’s the On-
tario case that’s attracted
the most attention, because
Lavigne’s large legal costs
are being paid by the Na-
tional Citizen’s Coalition, a

_ conservative group that has

their very existence is

bucks, guts and moxie.

The squealing that's gone
up from labor groups mar-
ried to the NDP couldn't be
louder if 10,000 hogs were
having their throats cut
with blunt knives. Dennis
McDermott, the Canadian
Labor Congress lad, says
the Lavigne case ‘‘might
well imperil the strength, or
even the existence, of the
CLC".

“Big labor is
like big .
government or:
big anything.
Father. knows
best.’

So what? Anyway,
McDermott’s statement was
an admission that if labor
unions didn’t pick
members’ pockets through
executive or majority tyran-
ny, the swag might be as
scarce as hair on Ron
Basford’s head.

used for collective bargain-

The Coalition has been
thorough.’ It commissioned
a Gallup poll to find out
what people think about the
issue, and guess what? The
poll even showed that 84
per cent of union
households don’t want
money from dues to go to
political parties that
members might not sup-
port. The general public
was 87 per cent against.

Big labor is like big
government or big
anything. Father knows
best. In the name of the
workers it hands out dough
for all kinds of wacky
things. In 1982, 1 think it
was, the CLC threw
$500,000 into the left-wing
sinkhole in Nicaragua.
Money has been spent on
disarmament propaganda,
pro-abortion propaganda
and God knows what else,
all of which would be
legitimate -- // members had
any control over it.

What about Big Business,

some will ask? It gives
money to causes, too. Weil,
shareholders can always cry
halt, and if business wants
to dissipate profits that way
(which it usually doesn't),
that's its own affair.

is exactly what Big Labor is
doing in its favorite areas.

The National Citizens
Coalition may be right
wing, but/it is slavish only
to the ideal of freedom and
has taken on Liberal and
Tory governments. When
Chuck Cook and Brian
Baloney , wanted to prevent
private groups from taking
out political ads during
federal election campaigns,
for instance, it defeated
them in the courts. For
which we should all be
grateful.

But I forgot to tell you
why I’m laughing. It's
because it was the
“‘progressives”” and other
social engineers who
wanted the damned
Charter, and now it looks
‘as if they'll be speared by it.

The same. sort of thing
happened to Robespierre,
you know.
