UESTION: I am em- barrassingly skeptical y about my own op- ” timism. I would ap- preciate-your commenting on such a strange phenomenon. Although so many frighten- ing signals are being hoisted these days that warn us of all sorts of tragedy being too close for apathy, I, never- theless, have what must be an | intuitive feeling that a great deal of progress is being made in humankind’s evolvement.. So much evidence seems to discount any logical reasons for optimism. Yet converse- ly, a lot can be made of some of the signs of transforma- tion within the human fami- ly. Trouble is, from my no- man’s-land of hope and op- ‘timism, I keep scurrying back to the logical tried and true pessimism in which all too many of us have become used to sheltering. My hope is bright, but my habitual tendency is to take leave of my hope and, sometimes (with apparently good reason), opt for pessimism and even fear. It seems so much more sen- sible these days to be negative, even though, in the midst of the negativity, one does not really feel at home or at least I don’t. I am truly “‘at home” in a climate of AT CATES PARK Summer fun DAY CAMP for boys and girls aged 6-12 wili again be run by North Shore Neigbourhood House during July and August. So why do I run away from it and seek out what seems to be a dwelling place more appropriate to the negativity which is so abun- dant in the year of our Lord, 1984? ask hayden stewart Freelance Counsellor Hayden Stewart may be reached at 261-6242 for appointments for individual, family or group counselling. I don’t deny my hope even when I turn my back on it. 4 just turn away for a while, knowing that my desertion will be temporary and that someday soon, I will feel at home again in my hope for mankind. I suppose al) this leads, not to a question, but rather to an invitation for you to comment. STEWART: A_ question might have made it easier for me! I’m with you in your sen- Sing that there is a positive stirring in the human family. jt has been so especially in this particular period of time from the early 60s to the pre- sent. The claim that we are moving extremely rapidly (and woefully awkwardly) in- to a ‘‘new age”’ ’ has a tremen- 1629 Lonsdale Ave., N. Van 985-0823 dous mass of evidence to sup- port it. If you are ‘‘a reasonable man’’, there will many a time when you will sense that pessimism must be your “‘dwelling place’’, if you are to keep your integrity. But if, as it appears you are also, a feeling and intuitive person, there will be times when you are bewildered by your pessimism. _ This is a day when reason and logic are sorely needed. And it is also a day when the - heart, or spirit or ‘‘inner- man’”’ is speaking more clear- ly and more often to more people in more lands in more different ways than any time I know about. In the ‘‘age”’ that is limping toward its en- ding, we tried desparately to enthrone reason as our prime authority. Now there is a sw- ing to honoring our “‘snirits’’. It is not that we need one emphasis and not the other, but that we are coming to see that it is time for us to honor our total per- sonhood. We are awkward just now because we have been thinking for ages that we could not be reasonable lovers and we do not yet have the confidence needed for be- ing loving reasoners. But we are drawing closer, thanks to people like you who are interested in finding the good balance of wholeness. 4 PIECE : WHITE BAY GROUP Camplete with Cushions C7 - Wednesday, June 27, 1984 - North Shore News : 7 t Schoo" The Bes duly 3 to Sir tb art 17 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE ACADEMIC CREDIT COURSES Algebra ll - Algebra 12 Social .
