Dear Editor: The basis of the letter by Mr. John Reynolds MLA that appeared in the News on August 17 is that the public sector can be operated in the same manner as the private sector. It is however more practical to add apples and oranges than it is to compare the public and private sec- tors. The purpose of the private sector is. ta generate profits for reinvestment. or for distribution to shareholders. This fact is indisputable. The public sector was never meant to be a profit centre. Even the most con- servative economists would agree. Adam Smith pointed out in “The Wealth of Na- tions” the basic respon- sibilities of government: Defense: Justice “the duty of the sovereign is to protect every member of the society from the injustice or oppres- sion of every. other member of it,” ; , Through social evolution this responsibility has been expanded to include those programs (Human Resources, Labour Relations Board, Human Rights) that, - although directly used by the few, are available to all, and -indeed benefit all through © the development of a hap- pier, better adjusted and consequently a more pro- Right wing? Wrong! Dear Editor: I can’t believe what I read. Our press, and especially our Eastern press, keeps calling the Bennett Gavernment reactionary and “right wing”. It is neither if we judge its actions as opposed to its words. For instance: B.C. Government spending is at an all time high. It is up 14 per cent on welfare; up 7 per cent on health and up 5 per cent on education. (All in real terms). As a percentage of the total provincial in- come, public and private, it is higher than when the eee 986-3487 736-0341 N.D.P. was in power! No extra billing for doc- tors. More hospital con- struction. More tax dollars for public transit and B.C. - Rail. A new Human Rights Act. Legal aid fully funded and so on. So what is all the fuss about? It’s about a few hun- dred civil servants losing their jobs. A well heeled vested interest is under at- tack (or so it thinks) and the media has rushed, pell mell, to its defense. “Hon. Jack Davis, M.L.A. North Vancouver-Seymour ductive populace. It is clear then that the output of the public sector cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Nukes and young minds Dear Editor: The federal. government's recent agreement to allow the U.S. to test the Cruise missile in Canada represents .a frightening escalation of the arms race. As psycholo- ‘gists we are extremely alarmed by this sbift in Cana- dian policy. - Research on North American children has shown that feelings of fear, anxiety and insecurity are the common experience of children and adolescents to- day, who are forced to live with the possibility of nuclear annihilation. We urge all parents and other concerned individuals to write to the Prime Minister and to their Member of Parliament, pro- testing the planned Cruise tests and insisting that Canada’s influence instead be used to encourage moves toward mutual disarmament and a more peaceful ‘and secure world..
