By NOEL WRIGHT Some 80 citizen volunteers without whom municipal government in West Van- couver would largely grind to a halt were honored Friday at the annual municipal dinner. They were the members of the 11 advisory committees boards and commissions whose thinking and recommendations provide guidance for council on questions ranging all the way from development ap- plications to dog-catching. Around 200 people, in- cluding spouses and other guests, sat down to salad, roast beef, apple tart, Okanagan wine and speeches in the new Seniors’ Activity Centre. In addition to the volunteers, West Van school board, aldermen and senior members of the municipal staff were among those present. Dr. Bob Collier, director of development, set the tone of the recognition ceremonies with an hilarious musical “roast” of municipal staff, sung to the tune of “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic” with piano accompaniment by Mrs. Collier. Aldermen -- emceed by Mayor Derrick Humphreys - - then took it in turn to in- troduce the various groups to be honored. f Wesman’s West Vancouver Memorial Library will be featuring the paintings of Ken F. Diana Hutchinson titillated her audience with stories about the deep blue _ Stories her male colleagues forced her to listen to behind the scenes. Bob Hicks was admirably brief -- com- menting that, if he tried to emulate Collier and Lan- skail, the company would be there all night. The two remaining speakers had no such qualms. David Finlay took 23 minutes to present a watch to retiring Alderman George Morfitt before finally getting around to his volunteer groups. Alderman Morfitt took a similar period to “roast” fellow council members and the mayor prior to in- troducing the subjects of his praise. A kind of Pat Paulsen of the locker room, he kept the laughs-coming with slick one-liners -- some of them more notable for their semantics than their good taste. One guest registered his disapproval by stumping out of the room halfway through the act. Aside from that, it was an evening of vintage Tid- dlycove at its best.
