Protests by North Van-
couver Chamber of Com-
merce to the federal govern-
ment over an 11 per cent
drop in shipbuilding sub-
sidies received the backing
of North Vancouver District
council Monday.

The chamber believes the
20 per cent subsidy was
slashed to nine per cent on
the assumption that local
shipyards have all the work
they can handle. But it adds
that this just isn't so.

In a letter to Herb Gray,
federal minister of Industry,
Trade and Commerce, the
chamber states, “We under-
stand that the decision may
have been based on the
premise that the industry
had ae full order-book
covering the next year or
two...

“On the west coast the
industry does not have an
order backlog and indeed,
many local shipyards are
beginning to lay off workers
as contracts are completed.”

The letter, which was
circulated to council, states
that “one in three jobs are at
stake in the industry on the
west coast: a total of 1000
yobs may be lost.”

The letter explains that all
the major B.C. shipyards
(with the exception of one in
Victoria) are located on the
North Shore.

industries, this would not
appear to be the case in
shipbuilding...

“We support your govern-
ments attempt to control
government spending, but
we feel that a reduction in
the shipbuilding industry at
this time is a false ecoromy.”

The letter urges that the

mediately to 20 per cent and

the council chambers during
discussion of the item,
saying that because_he is an

letter went to Senators R.
Perrault and H. Olson, the
Hon. C. Lapointe and M.P.s
R. Huntington and C. Cook.
