North Shore Argyle House: The Mad /atter’s Tea Party presented by West Van- couver Little Theatre, Shaws are every half-hour on Sundays, 2-4 p.m... to Labor Day. 1564 Argyle Spilsbury prefers pastels From pare 22 fill the Madrona Crescent home he has shared with Win for the past 31 years. Now a member of the Federa- tion of Canadian Artists, which gives him the coveted FCA desig- nation, Spilsbury still has the pastels he drew on the beach at Savary when he was 19 years old. To this day, he has never taken an art lesson, and his approach is refreshingly uncomplicated. “Painting is the oldest form of communication. To me a painting is successful if people get the same pleasure out of it as | did,"” he says, standing in the middle of his large downstairs studio that also includes the boxes of carefully labelled stides, taken by himself over his lifetime, from which he draws and paints. Atrim, dapper man who looks 15 years younger than his age, Spilsbury does about a dozen mixed media works per year, most of them West Coast mountain- and seascapes as well as ships and boats. He has also done paintings during his world travels to such places as Tahiti and Peru. “Over all this time pastels have proved to be among the most permanent of all the color painting mediums,” he says. At the time of the interview, Jim and Win were packing for a family reunion with their numerous children and grandchildren at the family place on Nelson Island, north of Lund, which they have developed since 1957 on 21 acres of waterfront. They usually reach the place in five and a half hours from the West Vancouver Yacht Ciub, where they moor their beloved 50-f1. Blithe Spirit, a diesel- powered, wooden-hulled West Coast character boat they bought after selling their airline in 1955. And what has Jim Spilsbury learned from all his adventures? “It doesn’t pay to make plans,” he retlects, ‘because if the gods are against you, you haven’! got a hope in hell, “You have to swing with the tides, otherwise you spend your whole life bucking those tides. “Sure, planning is good because it gives you a heading, a direction. But the basics can always change on you. “When I switched course in life | wasn't always happy but | always got somewhere | wouldn't have gotten to if fd been systematic and stubborn.”’ Ave. Into: 926-2228, Presentation House: Phiv it Again Samy, Michael Fera chreets this production of Woody Allen’s hit comedy, which stars local actors Joe Mattel as Bogan and Cavan Cunningham as Allan, Qpens tomorrow night, fuly Eb, aed p.m, $12/9.
