Her fourteen books, nine of which have been adapted for
television, have won her universal acclaim and a devoted fol-
lowing world-wide. She is also rather taken with her North
American fens, describing them as “just lovely and incredibly
loyal.” (Loyal is a word often used to describe her fans, five
hundred of whom turned up at one reading she gave recently
in Toronto).

So what does she think attracts so many readers to her
books? “Well, I think I fulfil peoples’ need for a good story. I
sce detective stories almost as a modern morality play.the

- detective always stands for order and for decency. I think you
could have a police thriller where all of the policemen are cor-
rupt but not a detective novel, not a mystery, oh no! The
police ir. my buuks do bring order out of chaos.”

She also seems genuinely distressed at the random nature
of some serial crimes. “Without a motive,” she says, “it

(these random crimes) are often truly evil.”

But this relationship between the author and reader can
sometimes be a strange one. P.D. James is very much an
establishment figure; an ¢x-magistrate and senior civil servant,
far removed from the death and horror of serious crime. Her
readers too, are mostly genteel, often clderly. Both are drawn
inexorably to this terrible world of lost mnocence and death.

Certain Justice sets a brutal murder in the order and serenity
of London’s Inns of Court. She is fond of quoting W. H.
Auden’s maxim that “One body on the drawing room floor is
far more shocking than a dozen bullet-ridden bodies lying in
Chandler's mean streets.”

Perhaps we all wish to experience the terrors and triumphs
of an investigation, to be guided by an expert and to see the
shocking reality of death. But again, only so long as we can
put it down when it gets too much, and only so long as the
police remain upright and incorruptible and the murderer

iis for a reason.

“F think the mystery does do that,” says James. “It does
bring the experience of murder to people who normally
would not (know about such things). But I do think that
peapic who read detective stories are fundamentally very law-
abiding.”

Let’s hope so, because if all her fans did decide to turn to
crime, with their combined knowledge of police procedure,
no detective would stand a chance.
