seen Russ Fretenburg
before.

Asa partner in First Flight
Paragliding, the North
Vancouver man spends most
warm summer days floating
over and above Grouse
Mountain.

And recendy in Oregon,

the 33-year-old put much of

what he learned trom his day
job to good use as he tied tor
first place ar othe U.S.
National Paragliding,
Championships.

Just how does one com-
pete in a paragliding conte

In the case of the
Nationals, competitors spend
eight days “racing” to a pre-
determined goal ch dav
offers a slightly different goal

and distance.

“One dav vou had one
hour to wet ia the air and stay
up undl the beginning of the
race, Which was signalled by a
large tarp being opened on
the ground,” — explained
Fretenburg. “You took a
photo of this tarp from the
air to prove vou were behind
the start line at the start
time.”

Competitors then had to
fly to a tumaround point,

take a photo of it te prove
that they went around it,
then they had te fh toa land-
ing goal,

Fretenburg has been
paragliding tor seven-and-a-
half vears and hopes te travel
to Australia next summer asa
member of the
team competing at the World
Paragliding Championships.
