Hundreds take part in fourth- annual event CLOSE TO 300 competitors took to the mats last Saturday during the fourth-annual World Traditional Taekwondo Union International Championships at Capilano College. While many local competitors won medals during the well-attend- ed event, six North Shore competi- tors won firsts in both their forms and sparring competitions, They were: Tonia Timperley (girls’ 13-15), Jonathon Siu (boys’ 13-15), Erin Dunlap (girls’ 11), Agata Konapka (14-16 year olds), Gabrielle McEwen (4-7 year olds), and Gaber Egri (7-9 year olds). Locals winning both a gold and a silver medal included: Mark Whorrall, Mathew Pawlett, Jason Marchand, Christine Brett, Greg Clewlow, Dean Short, Peter Konapka, Derek Bland and Peter Grajecyk. Of special. note was the first place finish of five-year-old Ryan Herden, competing in his first-ever tournament. In ‘addition to the hundreds of competitors, over 1,000 spectators took in the day-long tournament presented by North Taekwondo Centre. Competitors ranged in age from five to 50. ‘.
