BC Rail, a Crown corporation, announced Friday that it had ac- quired 100% of the shares of neighboring Vancouver Wharves for $15.75 million. But Mitchell said the move will result in BC Rail competing against the public sector. And he added that many people in his riding have raised concerns over the purchase. Mitchell said the New Demo- cratic government is “running amok” in the private sector. ‘It is extremely inappropriate for a publicly owned Crown cor- poration to be aggressively enter- ing into competition in other areas of the private sector,’’ said Mit- chell. He added that the provincial government is using Crown cor- porations as active agents of pro- vincial development to meet, what he called, its socialist ambitions. He also questioned what benefit the public will receive by BC Rail’s) purchase of Vancouver Wharves, “As taxpayers, we are also shareholders in these Crown cor- porations. “We should demand that the government explain how an intru- sion into the business world, such as BC Rail’s: purchase of Van- couver Wharves, will benefit: the public,’’ said Mitchell. But North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA David Schreck, in whose riding both BC Rail and Vancouver Wharves are located, said the purchase of terminal will guarantee supplies and contracts. “BC Rail leases land to Van- couver Wharves. With the finan- cial backing of BC Rail, it) will open up more job opportunities,” said Schreck. ‘‘Who could existing Awayajyy eeu; fq ojoug the cargo | By Surj Rattan News Reporter possibly suffer is beyond me.”’ BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall said it will be ‘business as usual’’ at Vancouver Wharves.
