FASHION Sunday, February 23, 1992 - North Shore News ~ 49 Scents are complicated blends TO SOME, perfume is simply a sweet smelling substance, but to the perfume maker it is the result of a complicated blending of many different materials. In order to obtain the essential oils that go into the making of a perfume there are various methods of separating the scent from the raw materials. Distillation, first carried out by an Arabian physician as early as the 10th century, involves steam- ing out the fragrance. A second method is called ex- pression and consists of squeezing and pressing the rare materials and is used for removing oils from citrus fruits. A third manner of extraction involves various methods of ab- sorbing the fragrance through substances such as wax, plant resins or alcohol. Regardless of the method chosen for making a perfume, many essential oils are extremely costly to extract, which ultimately sends the price of a perfume sky-high. A perfect example is the pure luxury of rose oil. Derived from the damask rose which is grown at the foot of the Balkan mountains, the rose must bloom for 30 days and then be picked in the early morning before the sun robs it of its essential oils. It then takes about 10 metric tons of rose blossoms to produce just a single kilogram of rose oil. FASHION FILE ASHION FILE is a weekly Sunday col- umn. Getting the Most from Your Per- fume The art of wearing perfume was perfected years ago by the carly American women who would wear their favorite fragrances in a bosom bottle. This flat, pear- shaped glass bottle was tucked in- side the corset between a woman’s breasts. Today, women are a little more practical, not to mention more individual, about where and how they apply their perfume. The Body Shop offers these tips to help the modern woman miake the most of her fragrance: @ Because scent rises, applying perfume behind the ears can only rae Invite ali Brides-To-Be & guest to attend a Free SINCE 1930 result in scenting the air. Fragrance applied behind the knees, or in a straight line from the navel to the breast bone is recommended. This. way the body heat disperses the lovely scent more slowly and the person wearing the fragrance will be able to enjoy the wonderful aroma too. Another suggestion is to wear the fragrance ‘“twherever you would like to be kissed. @ Climatic changes can affect the intensity of a fragrance. In cold climates the air tends to be drier which means a person may want to use more perfume and perhaps a heavier scent than usual. Warm climates, however, heighten the fragrance of a per- fume, so on hot summer days — go light! @ Never test more than four fragrances at a time and be sure to test them on parts of the skin that are as far away from each other as possible.
