12 — Friday, November 8, 1997 ~ North Shore News Low rainfall causing discolored water DESPITE RECENT rain- fall, the color and taste of Seymour Lake reservoir water have not improved. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter The Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) reser- voir’s water is slightly yellow and tastes more noticeably than usual of chlorine because of an unusual- ly low rainfall, according to GVRD spokesman Bud Elsie. Areas serviced by the Seymour reservoir include the North Shore east of Lonsdale, North Burnaby, and parts of Coquitlam, New Westminster, Delta and Surrey. Seymour Lake is down 30 feet from the top compared with last year at this time when it was spill- ing water at the dam. In October, the watershed received about 25% of the normal amount of rain for the month. The level of Capilano Lake is also low, but because it is a deeper lake, its water quality has not been adversely affected. According to the Vancouver Weather Office, 45.1 millimetres of rain fell at Vancouver airport from Monday through to Thurs- day morning. But the rainfali has been insuf- ficient to bolster Seymour’s low water level. “The situation hasn’t improved perceptibly at all,’’ said Elsie. According to Jones, the original theory was that when the lake is low, there is no exchange of water through the lake and the water tends to be stale; higher levels of into the lake. “it’s definitely a natural thing we’re seeing -but we're not con- vinced of the cause. It could be one of the two or a bit of both,” said Jones. Despite the low levels of water in the two North Shore reservoirs, the GVRD is not concerned about its water supply. iron and ammonia are naturally occurring symptoms. vestigating SPORTS ¢ Sports Exports, we beileve that skiing is more ¥ then jest @ sport. it's a way of fife...
