New provincial unit to

crack down

THE MINISTRY of the Environ-
ment has announced the creation
of an enforcement arm as part of a
new strategy for dealing with
large-scale polluters and other en-
vironmental offenders.

Environment Minister Bruce
Strachan said Environmental En-
forcement Units are being created
in cach of the ministry’s six ad-
ministrative regions.

“These units will operate in ad-
dition to the existing conservation
officer service and will handle ma-
jor waste, water and pesticide vio-
lations — with the greatest em-
phasis on waste,’’ Strachan said.

To form the new units, 29 new
positions will be added and
another 10 reassigned from
elsewhere in the ministry.

The new positions will be
allocated as follows: Vancouver
Island, five; Lower Mainland,
seven; Southern Interior, four;
Kootenay, three: Northern, six;
and Skeena, four.

“The immediate result wili be
increased monitoring and inspec-
tion of industrial and municipal
waste discharges,"’ the Minister
said,

“To put the strategy into action,
each region is identifying the most
serious cases of permit non-
compliance or environmental im-
pact, and in each case a work plan
will be prepared outlining the cor-
rective steps which the Ministry
will require the company or
municipality to take. .
