More to do at First Night LAST YEAR First Night orga- nizers were overwhelmed with the number of people who turned out to venues around Robson Square to celebrate the year’s end: more than 50,000 people ° clogged Vancouver streets trying to squeeze their way into performances. With increased services (many more seats, stages and perior- mers), and a new and improved streamlined ticketing process, fes- tival organizers anxious to avoid last year’s experience are deter- mined that things will be different this year. - A $5 button, which must be worn throughout the evening, en- titles First-Night goers to one free admission to all indoor perfor- mances ona first-come, first - seated basis. Tickets for all shows will be available one hour prior to show time. Outdoor performances are free. Buttons can be purchased at a variety of outlets, including BCAA offices, all B.C. Credit Uniors (in- cluding North Shore Credit Union), VanCity, McDonald's Res- taurants and Super Valu stores. Like last year, no alcohol wil! be served. And now for the line-up. One thousand artists, from the likes of Ballet B.C. to Katari Taiko, perform indoors and outdoors between 7 and 11 p.m. When the show ends at 17 p.m., First Night’s grand finale, variety EVELYN JACOB feature writer show and countdown to midnight gets underway at the Vanccuver Art Gallery. .
