Col. J.P. Felt Armoury in North Vancouver. The next training pro- gram begins in January 1989. The recent graduates completed a six-month training program which consisted of weekly four- hour classroom instruction ses- sions. Areas of study for the aux- iliaries included criminal law basics, federal and provincial stat- utes, bylaw enforcement, opera- tional training, self-defence, driv- ing and firearms. The graduates had to maintain a minimal 60 per cent standard over four major tests to continue in the training program. Said Const. Bob Beaudoin, auxiliary police coor- dinator for the North Vancouver RCMP: “We do require a level of quality because a lot is at stake. We want them to be assets, not liabilities.’” According to Beaudoin, the aux- iliary constables are appointed peace officers pursuant to the Police Act. The designation grants protection from personal liability while engaged in the lawful execu- tion of duties. ‘‘They assist regular members in patrol duties and in all matters of investigation from barking dogs to murders,”’ he said. The motivation for many is as basic as the desire for an opportu- nity to provide a valuable service to the community. But said Beau- doin: ‘‘Some of our auxiliaries are wanting to become regular Vancouver Museum Gift Shop members. They want to find out if it’s for them.” To be considered for training as an RCMP auxiliary constable a candidate must be a Canadian citi- zen, of good character, have a mature and responsible attitude, be between age 2! and 56, and have successfully completed high schoo! or have equivalent work-related experience. Ia- dividuals appointed as peace of- ficers in other areas of employ- ment and people licensed as private investigators or who are licensed under the Security Agencies Act cannot participate in the auxiliary prograin. Applicants must undergo a med- ical exam at their own expense within 30 days of application. The Ministry of Attorney General of B.C. funds the police auxiliary program.
