For years, Vancouver has been the only major city in Canada without an annual international Jazz festival. Now, a committee composed of musicians, jazz enthusiasts and broadcasters has formed to organize a major annual jazz festival. The event will be a significant toumst develop- ment for the Vancouver area and a major marketing push will be made in the Nor. thwestern US. The festival organizers are determined to provide a truly internapional festival, of high calibre, with a wide range of jazz and blues styles. The festival is an outgrowth of earher research and development of the idea by staff and programming volunteers at Vancouver Co- operauve Radio which pro- grams a wide variety of blues and jazz programs on a regular basis over CFRQ. FM Ken Pickering, who ts chaining the program steering committee, is enthusiastic about the chances of staging an annual Jazz festival in Vancouver “Vancouver needs and deserves a top- notch Jazz and Blues festival. Our own Jazz musicians pro- vide a tremendous resource. The committee intends to raise seed funding for the 1985 festival through ap- proaches to the City, provin- cial and federal governments. The cost of the °85 festival will be approximately $150,000, which includes musicians fees, travel ex- penses, administration and promouon costs The festival will be a non profit, chartable activity Charter donations may be made to the festival commit- tee through the Community Radio Education Society, 337 Carrall St.Van.
