A2 - Wednesday, April 27, 1983 - North Shore News Big Sister is watching I THINK the war of the sexes was finished a long time ago. It was a stalemate, if you'll excuse the ex- pression. The differences attributed to sex are vastly exag- gerated. At bottom, human psyches are hike flames. Some burn more brightly than others. It's the intensity of the flame, not the form it takes, that counts. Is there anyone left nowadays who would seriously suggest that men are automatically “stronger” than women, given that real strength is mainly a matter of will power? If you don't believe me, there’s Maggie Thatcher to prove it. Indira Gandhi too. I get along quite well with most women [| meet. For one thing, I believe in fidelity, I'm married, and _ so therefore I'm not a threat to any woman in the sense that I'm trying to make out with her. Conversely, [Tm Mr. Dull. Am I liberated? And sexual exploita- tion is a crime mucho heinous indeed. I am totally opposed to it. I swear. Still, sometimes it’s hard telling who is_ exploiting whom and for how much. Are there victims without crimes? Are chauvinists necessarily male? In my studies I have observed that in human mating practices, it is usually the female who chooses the male, then beguiles him into thinking that he has made the choice. I might be wrong about this, but it does seem to me that women don't do too badly when it comes to holding their own. Quite often I see groups of them: laughing among themselves. They must have something to laugh about. I mean, life can’t be totally a matter of being oppressed by males, can it? Surely there are moments when other things happen. Nevertheless, I'm a devoted feminist who thinks Norman Mailer was quite hysterical when he equated the women’s movement with totalitarianism. There’s nothing inherently evil in the idea of equal pay for equal work just as long as the work is actually equal.
