“A GARDEN is a love-
some thing, God wot.”
So quoth the Victorian
poet, T.E. Brown.

God wot it is also a back-
breaking thing, a dirty-
fingernail thing, and a trial
of the patience. But for the
thirty-odd gardeners of the
cherished plots at Navvy
Jack Point, lovesome would
win hands down.

To see it now, as the photo
shows, laid out so tidily,
flourishing rows of peas nd
beans and the start of a
hillside terrace, is to boggle
at the brute muscular
strength and endless grubby
hours that went into its
orginal conception. Ricky
Tourigny (inset photo),
resident in the adjacent
condominium, lives in an
apartment closely
overlooking this space, and
it tantalized him, covered as
it was with blackberry tangle
and builders’ discards. He.
longed for some place to
grow a few runner beans and
sweet peas, and thought
surely this sunny derelict
area could be reclaimed.

So just over a year ago he
began to log the first of the
hundreds of hours he would
spend grubbing and rooting
and digging out rock and
digging in topsoil, making
drainage ditches, finding
fencing, recruiting help and
bumming matenal and tools
as he went along. He got
some help and he got some
money which he added to
the three hundred dollars

he’d himself sunk in a job of
bulidozing. Someone had the
bright idea of ‘making it a
neighboorhood enterprise,
and this brought more
money, more help, and even
such refinements as a tool
shed, donated by Wood-
ward's Stores, and a water
hook-up courtesy of the-
Shorewood apartments next
door.

Last year was a rotten year
for gardens, rainy and cold
and slow. Still, those who
had got one of the twenty-
five plots felt themselves
lucky despite the weather,
and really the harvests
reaped in the fall were quite
remarkable, considering the
inauspicious beginnings. So
it was decided that these
first-timers, who had lugged
in sea-weed and manure and
built up a compost heap and
nursed their tiny acreage and
dreamed seed-catalogue
dreams, should have another
shot at the same plot. There
are mighty expectations of
this year's reaping, no ex-
cuses this time around!

Ricky, whom obviously
nothing in the world could
persuade to loll around, is
pushing the need_ for
beautification of the
surroundings to the gardens,
now that most of them are on
the way to fruitfulness. He
wants to make a frame for
the picture, with decorative
trees to screen the ends and
an attractive landscaping of
the slope which mses up
behind to Argyle Avenue.

planting and before
weeding, he has organized
