B2 - Sumday, May 9, 1982 - North Shore News CREE SO tI nn Now is not the time to panic After the last two games or so, this would have been a good week to have had Terry Yorath’s column instead of mine. It’s difficult to say anything except it has been totally embarrassing for everybody connected with the club from the top nght down to all of us on the field. While it’s obvious that we've run into a bad spell, although this is being written before Saturday night's game against Dnillers, I don’t think it’s fair of anyone to start screaming for major changes. A team doesn't go from being strong to being the exact opposite in a couple of games. Against Portland Timbers nothing worked, and the same has to be said for the way we played against San Jose on Wednesday. And, of course, when you run into injunes and have to start inserting new players, it takes time for them to ad- just. Then there's always a danger of trying too hard; of trying to make the big play by yourself rather than depending on each other. Mahood back in racing DOWN BUT not out is the way a North Shore Formula Atlantic driver would sum up his position this weekend. Andy Mahood, 26, is back with the pack when the International Conference of Sports Car Clubs cham- pionship racing series returns to Westwood race track im Coquitlam this weekend. Being assistant coach, I'm in the position of having to make things work, and beheve me, John Giles and | by Peter Lorimer Fen | are trying to tum things around. We have no _ in- tention of having this kind of week carry on any longer. Usually, a bad game can be put down to one or two The championship driver was slowed down this season when his Ralt RT-1 Formula Atlantic machine had a dropped valve in the Seattle opener three weeks ago, causing over $4,000 in damage and necessitating a major engine rebuild. The damage prevented him from racing im _ the Portland round as well as Orcas drown Hawks THE WEST Van Orcas breakdowns: however, for some as yet strange reasons, we had 10 or 11 breakdowns — all at once. Try to keep in mind that the lads feel worse than anyone about what's hap- pened. We all have pride in our abilities, and believe me, after a week like we've had, the feelings are not com- placent. It seems that there's a bit of complaining going on about David Harvey over his goalkeeping. That’s unfair. David kept us from an even worse rout in Portland while we were doing nothing to give him any help. The big fellow is a top class keeper and those who think otherwise are not seeing what’s happening on the field. The other week I received a lengthy letter from a 17- year-old fan in North Vancouver written some time ago in which he ex- pressed concern about our forwards, our lack of speed in midfield, our goalkeeper and Bob Lenarduzzi and Paul Nelson. It's a difficult letter to finishing the Seattle race. As a result, Mahood now sits well behind in the points standings but has “every intention of changing that state of affairs.” Mahood hopes to establish a championship in the Formula Atlantic category of the ICSCC series this year. If successful, it would mark the third successsive championship for the racer, who was ICSCC Formula Ford champion in 1980 and CASC B.C. Region Formula Ford co-champion in 1981. As in 1981, Mahood will be competing in selected comment about except to say that based on last week, none of us can accept any laurel wreaths for our performances. However, let's try and keep in mind that Johnny Giles has one of the best soccer brains anywhere, and is highly acknowledged around the world. He does not make selections based on anything but his desire to see the team win. Now I must make some comment on the knock on Bobby Lenarduzzi and Paul Nelson. There almost seems to be a tradition that these two take a lot of abuse from some elements of the crowd. Paul has been around enough years to have proven himself to coaches and so has Bob Lenarduzzi. In fact, Bobby seems to have been good enough for Jim Easton, the first coach of the Whitecaps, back in 1974, Eckhardt Krautzun, the next coach, then Tony Waiters, Bob McNabb and now Johhny Giles. Then too. he has been good enough for his coaches and managers for a action with the ICSCC races in this area. Mahood has sup- plemented the Pentax Cameras/CKVU _ spon- sorship of his machine with backing from Lens & Shutter Camera Stores and CAM 2 Motor Oil. His car is capable of going faster than 160 mph and can accelerate from zero to 100 in under six seconds. number of years when he played in Reading, and for the coaches and managers of the Canadian national team for a long time. It mightn’t hurt if some of the complaining fans tried to see the good that the players do. They'd find it far out- weighs the bad. Now that’s out of the way I am pleased to receive mail, even if it is critical. It’s a personal touch I enjoy. Keep the faith, fans, we'll be back. Pomeroy praised by North Van City NORTH VANCOUVER City council added its praise to that of thousands for Vancouver marathon winner Stephen Pomeroy at _ its meeting Monday night. Pomeroy, 24, won the 26- mile race in 2:16.56, beating out an impressive field of 2,400 runners. The surprise winner is better known to the council as the City’s planning technician. Much to everyone's surprise, Pomeroy tumed up at work the day following the race - a little stiff. but very happy. “Stephen Pomeroy has honoured both the City and himself with an outstanding victory in the Vancouver Marathon,” said alderman Gary Paine. “His time of 2:16.56 is world class, and he is a world class athlete without doubt.” Said alderman Ralph Hall: “Any young man with that kind of stamina should consider entering politics!” Council unanimously passed a motion praising Pomeroy for his ac- complishment. “It was quite a_ feat,” commented Mayor Jack ungvaey Soccer NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held on THURSDAY, MAY 13th, 1982 at 7:30 PM at Lynn Valley Legion Hall, Lynn Valley Road, North Vancouver, B C ALL MEMBERS, COACHES & MANAGERS ARE REQUESTED TO ATTEND FREE COURTESY CARS For ICBC Claims agai scored two and one professional Formula played to a convincing 31 goals respectively with Atlantic races across Canada win over the Whitehawks David Veuper nabbing the througout the year but Saturday ino boys under 11 other anticipates few date conflicts APUCLUTUUTTLLICUIEUULTIUICUTCUGeUUCGLULLUCUEEROTCUUCUUMADLOCSUC EEOC held hockey action , hatha fue + Chrs Rowe scored two | Tops Moe é Mii ancne 46h goals. with Lenme Mclean —om making up the total But) Uhree days later the Orcas were on the losing side ~e: FOOTBAL in a 54 match apainst the Blackhawks ino Hugo Ray REGISTRATIONS park Rowe and Mcl can May 15 Qrordon 1C.B.C.
