A7 - Sumday, March 14, 1982 - North Shore News EE cal x Socialist society can solve abortion Dear Editor: The anti-abortionists seem to have overlooked = an important fact — “banning” abortion will not prevent it. It will not prevent unwanted pregnancies. It will not end the poverty which makes child-beanng an economic consideration. It will force muhons of women to resort to back-alley abortions which have already killed thousands of women and injured thousands’ more. Only a bona fide Socialist society, advocated by the Sociahst labor party, based on social ownership and democratc worker control of the economy, can ap- proach this and other social problems sanely and ef- fecavely. Organised to serve the needs of every member of society, Socialism will eliminate poverty and ignorance, improve birth control education, and family planning, provide adequate day-care facihties,. etc. It will be a society wherein the decision to have or not have a child will be a truly free, human decision, uncompromised by economic considerations or legal restnctions. James Minal Burnaby Make foreign students pay up Dear Editor: Education is a bargain in .C.,; especially for foreign Students who come to get their grade 12 diploma here. Western Canada College is one of our insitutions which will oblige for a suff fee. Its five month pressure” cooker course 1s aimed at ad- mittance to U.B.C.. Simon Fraser orl Vic. Our fees at university level are among the lowest in the world. That's the attraction. They are heavily subsidized by the B.C. taxpayer. You and I put up $9.00 out of every $10.00 that it costs to give young people a degree in this province. The scam that these B.C. educators are engaged im is selling our low fee university education to well-to-do foreigners. Charge a bundle for a shortened grade 12 course and ‘cave the rest to us. We'll toot the bill for everyone's university education regardless of their wealth or where they come from. Registration at our universities is on a “first come, first served” basis. So if our young people are slow Thanks to Max's rescuer Dear Editor: On Saturday, March 6, 1982, my son ran away 1o sea. He had become bored while waiting for his older sister to finish browsing at the North Vancouver Library at 14th and Lon- sdale, and had left quietly, sparing her any farewells. We were extremely fortunate in that a young man noticed this four-year- old boy alone on the SeaBus and prevented him from disembarking for the bnght hghts of the Big City. This same man rode back with Max to the North Shore and then set out on foot to ac- company him to the safety of his own doorstep, not realizing that the boy's doorstep is on West 24th. Meanwhile Max's older sister — entirely frantic by that time was cruising Lonsdale by bus in the hope of catching sight of our wanderer — when_= she spotted them near [Sth. ] am told that Max was treated to the sort of warm welcome he Not too late to save Canada?
