Crist’s alleged comment
(while supporting the
mayor's request for a sub-
stantial raise in. salary) that
“you get what you. pay for.”
Come now, Mr. Crist, you
can’t seriously mean that!!

Dear Euitor:

The News recently had a
letter from a Ms. Douglas
about motorcycles being
dangerous to children at
parades, and her uninformed
comments prompt me to
reply.

After 30 years behind the
wheel of a car, I took up
motorcycling 13 months ago.
Since then, [ve covered

! over 15,000 miles on one, in
all kinds of weather, and in

Hot dog stand fears confirmed

Dear Editor:

The worst fears with
regard to the new Dun-
darave concession were con-
firmed when we went there
for the first ocean swim of
the year. At least eight paper
coke cups were strewn about
the beach as were in-
numerable packages and
pieces of paper, all identi-
fiable as originating from the

concession. What was
formerly a delight has
become one more litter-des-
-poiled facility.

The concession itself is
both unsightly and badly
sited; the lawn on which it is
‘placed is now no longer
available for the picnics that
many used to enjoy.

To be fair, the lady and
gentleman running the con-

cession were both cheerful
and polite and responded
readily to my request that
they do something about the
litter, but that would be
impossible if they were busv

A facility that was not
wanted or needed has been
foisted on us by an unthink-
ing Parks and Recreauon

mayor's stipend of a basic
$30,000 to run a $22 million
municipality with another

public employee — _ the
Prime Minister! Mr.
Trudeau is paid (very

roughly) $100,000 (3 and 1/3
times Mr. Beil’s salary) to
operate a whole country
whose budget is very close to
$60 BILLION. On that basis,
who is  underpaid?. The
amount of business (in
dollars) handled, does not
necessarily govern the salary
of the people who operate it.
There are hundreds of other
factors to consider.

I share Ald. Lakes’ alarm
and wonder if a raise in pay
to aldermen and mayor will
guarantee a better job.

Now that he has an-

full-time mayor I presume
Mr. Bell will be terminating
his consulting business.
That’s too bad — becausé !
was thinking of consulting
him with regard to finding
some method of convincing
an elected mayor that. he is
expected to reply to all
official correspondence
from any person who., helps
pay his salary.
