Put away the downriggers

SINCE I'll be fishing in
Alaska and on the north
coast of B.C. for the next
few weeks, updating the
local hot fishing spots is
difficult.

My next two columns will
therefore concentrate on tips for
fishing the Lower Mainland’s two
most popular summer fisheries:
Coho. off Dundarave and the
mouth of the Capilano River (this
week); and on Aug. 18, Sockeye
— including: pinks — off the
mouth of the Fraser River.

First advice is put away the
downriggers for the Dundarave
and Capilano areas,

The vast majority of fish are
caught using live or cut-plug her-
ring, especially right off the
mouth of the Capilano. Trollers
using hootchies may have their
days early in the summer, but as
summer progresses herring takes
over.

stay well clear of boats anchored

current may drag your lines over

Steve Ingo captures two gold
medals at the B.C. provincial
age-group swimming .champion-
ships in Victoria. Ingo, a member
of the North Shore’s Chena Swim
Club, swims to victory in the
200m ‘freestyle’ (2:20) and the
400m freestyle (4:20).

chinook like them slower (one to
two rotations per second).

{f you plan on fishing this area,
make sure your engine is in good
working order and starts prompt-
ly. The strong currents can get
you in trouble quickly.

If you are going to anchor in a
strong tidal area, such as near the
marker at the river mouth, make
sure you have enough chain and a
good anchor. A general rule of
thumb is 3 feet (1 metre) of chain
per foot of hull length.

In addition, placing a couple of

large floats on the end of your
anchor rope will allow you to un-
tie your anchor line and chase a
large chinook as it runs in the
current.
